May-June 1947.
   First sign of trouble. Split in AFPFL. National Socialist section and Communists begin openly criticize U Aung San and his new policies of rehabilitation and civil postings. A period of general unrest and uncertainty. U Aung San begins losing his hold on the ‘mass’. Defiance strikes threaten to start and widespread non-cooperation with his policies, financial retrenchment and new administration schemes and projects. National Socialists under leadership of U Kyaw Nyein begin big scale ‘dacoity’ attacks in Delta areas under cover of Communist rebellion in Central Burma area. U Aung San strongly condemns ‘dacoity’, a political weapon of his own creation now being used by his new opponents---the National Socialists.
    AFPFL [and] PVO compete in political ‘dacoity’ for party funds and arms. Bribery, corruption and jobbery rife. U Aung San’s city Hall speech in mass rally strongly condemns corruption and removes U Ba Pe from Cabinet in connection with widely known Excise bribe scandal reported to involve U Ba Pe, U Tin Tut and Kyaw Nyein.
    The latter two in UK. U Aung San expresses his disgust and strong determination to dismiss Kyaw Nyein from office on his return. Socialist followers in AFPFL resent this and determine to save their leader, Kyaw Nyein. Hence public widely believe [Kyaw Nyein] commenced plot of assassination. U Saw made scapegoat. True or otherwise, this is widely believed by public and some claim to have material evidence to support their views.[14]

P/145  Burma: Curse of Independence
Would be a crime, were it done by the defence. Ba Nyunt, Thu Kha, Khin Maung Yin and Maung Ni were all spared. After examining the evidence, Saw’s defence counsel, Derek Curtis-Bennet, KC, declared unequivocally that it was ‘cooked’[42] and it is perhaps relevant that Saw protested his innocence even as he went to the gallows. One has to bear in mind that neither the British nor the League wanted a distruption in completing the transition to independence, and, after the handing over of power to the interim government, its home member, Kyaw Nyein, was in charge of the police[43] and the courts. Saw knew this and urged the governor to ‘approach His Majesty’s Government to send out Special Police Officers to this Country for the purpose of investigating into the Case’.

P/146 Burma : The Curse of Independence
After Saw was hanged, we find the new British ambassador to a now independent Burma writing to one M.E. Dening in the Foreign office about someone of importance in the League or the police, ‘[He has undoubtedly taken the major part in bringing Saw to the gallows, and that too by methods not entirely in accord with Queensbury rules.’[47] Although the Foreign Office has censored the name of this party, an index in its files suggests he may have been Tun Hla Oung,[48] the CID chief who had been in overall charge of the investigation, and Tun Hla Oung’s record of service with SOE reflects a disquieting question concerning his ‘trustworthiness’.[49] In January 1947, he was modest district superintendent of police with a past record of hostility to the League, and, on 28 March 1947, after the Attlee-Aung San Agreement, he tendered his application for early retirement—only to withdraw it soon afterwards when Kyaw Nyein offered him the plum job of deputy inspector general of police.[50] { Shelby Tucker (2001:p146) Burma: Curse of Independence}
